We use prototypes as a way to explore elements of this complex system. Unlike traditional prototypes, we use these interventions as a way to explore an area of the design challenge with minimal risk, investment, and time [Maiorana, 2021]. As such, these prototypes shift the focus from learning about the thing, to using the thing to learn. These prototypes range from highly resolved experiences that took months to create to (Monsters of Engineering) to simple experiences that were designed and executed within hours (Opportunity of a Lifetime). In all cases, these experiences helped our team more deeply understand some aspect of the design challenge.
